Assessment and Reporting

Assessment and Reporting

At GGLPS we believe assessment is integral to all teaching and learning.

‘Assessment involves the gathering and analysis of information about student performance and is designed to inform practice. It identifies what students know, understand, can do and feel at different stages in the learning process.’ Making the PYP Happen 2009.

Assessment is the key component that allows us to effectively differentiate the curriculum and personalize learning. We believe that the best assessment is ongoing, relevant and authentic. Reporting involves parents, students and teachers as partners.

Student learning is communicated in a variety of ways.

Learning portfolios, including work samples accompanied by task and achievement records are sent home at the end of each term.

Parents receive a mid-year summary and end of year summary report highlighting student’s development measured against their year level achievement standard. The Australian Curriculum Achievement Standards outline the knowledge, skills and understanding that students are expected to develop and demonstrate through their learning, specific to their year level. Students year level achievement standards can be accessed at the front of the learning portfolio and on the ACARA website.

The following 5-point scale is used to communicate student achievement on portfolio and semester summary assessment sheets.

Achievement:

Excellent       the student is demonstrating excellent achievement of what is expected at this year level.

Good              the student is demonstrating good achievement of what is expected at this year level.

Satisfactory the student is demonstrating satisfactory achievement of what is expected at this year level. (Working at year level standard)

Partial            the student is demonstrating partial achievement of what is expected at this year level.

Minimal          the student is demonstrating minimal achievement of what is expected for this year level.

Adjusted curriculum

Individual Learning Plan (ILP)                  the student has been working within an ILP in a particular curriculum area and personalised comments indicate their progress.

Student effort will be communicated using the following descriptors:

Effort:

Outstanding effort and involvement

Positive and involved

Satisfactory effort, cooperation and organisation

Variable effort, interest and organisation

Additional opportunities for sharing student development

Voluntary parent teacher interviews are held at the end of term one. GGLPS encourages teachers and carers to communicate in regards to student development as needed throughout the remainder of the year.

Student led conferences are held in Term 3, these involve students sharing their learning with their carers.

In 2017 we introduce the PYP exhibition for students in their final year of the PYP. Students are required to demonstrate the essential elements of the PYP.  It is a time of celebration as the students prepare to move to middle school.
