Term 4 - Week 1

Hi Everyone,

Welcome back to Term 4 – the children have settled back well.

Year 3AM have started the Term off very positively. I am impressed by their resilience and ability to continue with old routines while at the same time adjusting to a new teacher.  -Miss Wurst

Year 3P have also started off positively and have been completing our inquiry unit on Teamwork, which we will implement strategies learnt at our camp.-Mrs Prideaux

Portfolios – Please return to your child’s class teacher so new work samples can be added to them

Narnu Farm Camp

25th -27th October (Wed, Thu, Fri) https://narnufarm.com.au/school-camps-holiday-camp-for-kids-summer-youth-camp/farm-camp-for-schools/

On Wednesday afternoon 3Cluster students shared letters written in literacy with some year 5 students who went to Narnu 2 years ago. Students wrote questions and wonderings they have about the camp. Together, the students viewed photos from past camp visits and discussed different aspects and activities they had experienced at Narnu. This was a helpful activity in both preparing our students for next week as well igniting some more excitement about what is in store for them at camp.

Students were able to see photos of where they will be sleeping, eating and learning. You may like to ask them about this and discuss with them what they saw and discussed with their year 5 buddy. Their year 5 buddy will also be writing them a letter which they will have the opportunity to open and respond to while they are at camp.

Our next Unit of Inquiry is ‘Sharing the Planet’ and will be focused on the conservation of water.

We will be collecting data at camp on our water usage. In preparation of this, we would like your child to time how long they shower for at home. At camp, we will simply tallying how many showers are had. When we return to school we will analyse data gathered. Students will bring home a sheet that they can record their time on and bring back to school – from this we work out an ‘average shower time.’

Samaritan’s Purse

This year we will be continuing to support the operation Christmas child program which is part of the Samaritan’s purse organisation.  We were involved last year and made up over 100 boxes to be given to children who have very little at Christmas time. Boxes can be bought from the front office for 50c. If you wish to create a box with your family, you can choose which age and gender of a child the box will be for, fill it with different items that are within the guidelines found on the pamphlet or website, return it to school by Friday 27th October. We will bless these boxes in our school community before sending them to children overseas https://www.samaritanspurse.org.au/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child/  We hope to create a 2 boxes, one for a 9 year old girl and one for a 9 year old boy. If you have an item that you can donate, please bring this in by next Tuesday as we will be away on camp.

Golden Grove Lutheran Church (GGLC) playgroup – Playgroup is run each Friday of the school term by ChildSafe volunteers of GGLC and is open to all within our church, school and wider community.  Playgroup begins at 9:30am with mainly music, followed by a fruit snack and playtime.  Gold coin donation

Narnu Farm Camp

Thank you to the helping parents Natasha Perryman, Susan Kent, Shaun Kerin, Mark Fraser, Rick Norris, Karl Albrecht, Tim Kriewaldt, Robert Barnes, Paul Kramer and Peta Albrecht who gave up their time to help on the Year 3 camp. Your supervision of small groups helped the children to participate in their activities safely and assisted their learning and questioning. Thanks to Mel Arnold, Stephanie Wurst and Sue Prideaux for organising the camp and ensuring that it linked to our current UoI central idea of ‘Water Conservation’, which was also highlighted by the staff at Narnu Farm. It was a great time of learning and helping the children to develop their confidence and independence.

Year 3 students shared their letters written at camp with the current year 5 students. We shared some of the camp photos and our learning about water conservation with them. The year 3 students really enjoyed reading their buddy letters at camp and enjoyed reflecting on their camp experience at Narnu Farm. The year 3 children especially enjoyed horse riding, the animal feeling, the water walk to the beach, exploring the river and barrage and seeing the river mouth. One group was lucky to observe the barrage lock cleaning, which only happens every 2 years. There were a lot of bird life and seals there as well.
