  • NAPLAN testing is next week on Tuesday 9th, Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th We have been preparing the children using some practice tests and making the experience a normal part of the classroom routine.

Children need a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast. The test will be first thing on Tuesday morning. Testing on Wednesday and Thursday will be after recess. Instrumental teachers are given a timetable so they can work around these times.

If you wish to look at practice tests, some examples can be found at www.naplanresources.com.au (Choose Year 3 and then numeracy, language conventions etc.) Study ladder also has a range of NAPLAN activities for children to practice.

A separate email will be sent today regarding other costumes.

Curriculum
Unit of Inquiry Who we are: Healthy Lifestyles
Students can take part in the Premier’s Be Active Challenge http://www.pbac.sa.edu.au/ We still need empty packets of food that children regularly eat e.g. breakfast cereals, muesli bars etc. for food labels and working out change in the class shop.

English
Students have been focusing on literal and inferred comprehension skills when reading texts. It would be great support for your child’s learning if you could ask your child questions about their readers to help them develop and expand their understanding of text meaning, perhaps ask 2 literal questions e.g. Where did they find the dog? and an inferred question e.g. What is the message of the story?

Yesterday the whole school took part in Simultaneous book reading. Mr Maddren read the picture book ‘The cow jumped over the moon’. This week students will have a time to preview the Book Fair in the Library. Next week they may purchase books. Part of the money raised goes back to the school.

The Spelling focus for Week 5 is ‘le’ e.g. eagle, simple, disable.

Maths
As we practise measuring the mass of foods and other items using grams and kilograms and the capacity of liquid containers using millilitres and litres, students could practise this at home with your kitchen scales. First they need to estimate the measurement, then measure.

Christian Studies Christian Beliefs
In our new Christian Studies unit our central idea is ‘The person and work of Jesus is central to Christianity’. Students will be researching the social context in which Jesus lived and draw conclusions about how he chose to respond to people and events. Students have painted their image of who they think Jesus is and have had discussions about his character based on biblical accounts and his teachings and parables.

Students will be encouraged to present their understanding in an interesting presentation to the class i.e. film, script, advertisement etc. Both classes will be going to the Golden Grove Village Woolworths this week. The focus is looking for healthy choices when we shop.

Spelling focus for Week 9 is suffix able, i.e. adaptable, dependable, noticeable
