Term 3 - Week 1

Hi Everyone,

Next Week

Student-Led Conferences– don’t forget that Student Led Conferences are in Week 2 (Tuesday 1st of August and Wednesday 2nd of August) Please book an appointment with your child in their classroom via https://www.schoolinterviews.com.au/ and enter the code w5uz8.  An hour is allocated for each SLC per child. Students will not need to wear their school uniform.

  • SLC show each child they are special and that their learning is valued. The
  • Purpose is for your child to teach you what he or she has been learning.
  • Since it is set up in stations, it is not possible to organise other available times as we do for parent/teacher interviews.
  • Not a time to talk with the teacher about how your child is going.
  • Siblings don’t come because this is a special, uninterrupted time for you and your child. GGOSH is available through the online booking system. No mobile phones please.

What will happen during the conference:

  • You and your child come to the classroom and begin at one station and rotate. Stations are not shared to allow the full focus to be on your child.
  • The Year 3 stations will be: Literacy, Numeracy, Christian Studies, Unit of Inquiry and PE.
  • There will be prompt questions to support and guide you when talking to your child.

6:30pm – Where did we come from? (Reception to Year 4)

7:30pm – What’s happening to us? (Year 5 to Year 6).

Knitting /crocheting

3AM students are really enjoying learning to knit or crochet. If you are available to drop in Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays 8.30 – 9.50am to help teach individual students, it would be much appreciated.

Uniform

Reminders: children with pierced ears should be wearing ‘a maximum of one plain silver or gold stud or sleeper (small) in the lower lobe of each ear’ (Uniform Policy). Also, some children have been forgetting their school tie. We would appreciate your support with this. There is a uniform questionnaire being emailed to parents and carers and the link is also in the ‘School News’ below.

Year 3 Curriculum

Maths

Multiplication and Division facts (2s, 3s, 5s, 10s). Maths practise at home: students revise 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x  tables this week, focusing on the tables they are most weak in (or other sums given by your teacher) for 5 min on 4 nights using www.mathsisfun/numbers/math-trainer-multiply.html, flash cards or other methods.

Students are creating a map of their own island with features that show information clearly e.g. compass rose, landmarks, key.

Literacy

Spelling: long o sound e.g. open, Roman, anchovy.

Information Reports: Students are now researching a ‘vertebrate’ of their choice, including writing notes and expanding ideas into sentences. The importance of Academic Honesty is being taught. Students must acknowledge the source of their information, rather than saying ‘I just read it somewhere/saw it on Youtube etc’ or copying sentences/paragraphs because they don’t understand the information.

Unit of Inquiry Where we are in place and time.

Last Monday, we had a guest speaker Major Moogy Sumner (AM), a Ngarrindjeri Elder, to talk about connection with land, through telling stories and showing artefacts. We were very lucky to have Moogy, who is a member of the Archaeological congress, World Council of Elders, SA Aboriginal Advisory Council. He is also involved in the filming of Storm Boy 2 currently taking place in the Coorong area, which is where we are going on camp in Term 4.

Students are now using this information and their knowledge of the school history (through photographs and discussions) to identify the connections they have to a place and considering how they can demonstrate the connections e.g. through photographs, stories, movies.

Reminders

Celebration Book in the take home pack to hand up on Mondays with maths practise completed.

Library Days: 3A Thursdays, 3P Fridays.

PE Uniform: Tuesdays and Wednesdays. (Year 3P Thursdays as well until the end of term 3)

Term 3 - Week 6

Hi Everyone,

Year 3 Curriculum

Unit of Inquiry Where we are in place and time.

Students went to the TTG Library where the teacher read ‘My Place’ by Nadia Wheatley and initiated a discussion about the children’s idea of special places. Students asked their inquiry questions about who is connected and how they are connected to the Library and what was at that place before the Library was built.

We moved to the Council Chambers where the Deputy Lord Mayor spoke about the history and purpose of the Council. Again students asked their inquiry questions about people connected to the Council Chambers. The information is helping students to record their understandings of how they and others are connected to a place (summative assessment for this unit).

Thank you to the parent helpers who came along. Your support is very much appreciated.

Maths

Addition and Subtraction facts. Maths practise at home: students revise addition and subtraction number facts over the next 4 weeks for 5 min on 4 nights using the websites: https://www.mathsisfun.com/numbers/math-trainer-addition.html https://www.mathsisfun.com/numbers/math-trainer-subtract.html, flash cards or other methods. The websites allows different levels to support students’ different needs.
